Cantique de Jean Racine was written when the 20 year old composer was still a student, for a competition, which he won. It is a beautiful, understated piece, originally for Choir and Piano or Organ, but here it is transcribed as a quintet for 4 Flutes and Piano or Organ.

This waltz has a lovely major:minor folksongy feel to the first theme with a contrasting answer in the major key, which is all repeated. For the middle section we have a gentle melody in the major key, again repeated. The original melody returns, and the piece finishes on a thoughtful reference to the gentle middle section.
