Cantique de Jean Racine was written when the 20 year old composer was still a student, for a competition, which he won. It is a beautiful, understated piece, originally for Choir and Piano or Organ, but here it is transcribed for 4 Clarinets and Piano or Organ.

Entry of the Gladiators has been called Grand Chromatic March, and Thunder and Blazes in 1901 in an arrangement by Laurendeau for windband. This arrangement became popular as a Screamer march, which is circus music to introduce clowns and stir up the crowd. It is also played for rousing concert performances, as in Last Night of the Proms. This version is for Mixed ensemble of Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Piano.

Oh ma charmante, epargnez moi, or Oh my charming one, spare me: a Creole style habanera mingling sadness with restless passion. According to Gottschalk, this should be played exactly as instructed, so that the player does not overly personalise, but plays exactly as the composer wanted. Quartet for 3 Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet.

Arietta, the first of a cycle of Lyric Pieces. This was one of Grieg s favourite melodies. He also used it as a waltz in a piece called Remembrance which is the final piece of the cycle. For quartet of 3 Bb Clarinets and Bass Clarinet.

This waltz has a lovely major:minor folksongy feel to the first theme with a contrasting answer in the major key, which is all repeated. For the middle section we have a gentle melody in the major key, again repeated. The original melody returns, and the piece finishes on a thoughtful reference to the gentle middle section.
