His father was a theatre conductor who influenced his son’s career choice. Richard became a librettist, playwright, and composer instead of going into medicine. Despite his lack of popularity today, he was very prominent in his time in Vienna.

Career

Genée is mostly remembered for writing the libretto for Die Fledermaus, the most famous operetta by Johann Strauss Jnr. He was approached to write the libretto as he had an extensive theatrical background. Whereas Johann Strauss had a lack of experience in this sector.

He also performed translations of librettos by Jacques Offenbach and W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

Genée retired aged fifty-five but lived until he was seventy-two – choosing to slow down and enjoy life! He died on 15th June 1895 in Baden, Austria.
