The Waltz of the Flowers is played towards the end of Act II of the Nutcracker Suite. It is very hard to believe that the first performance of the Nutcracker was not deemed as a success? Words circulated such as ”confusing choreography ‘; ‘lopsided libreto’; ‘abrupt transition between the ordinary world of Act I to the fantasy in Act II’. A lot of criticism focused on the fact that children featured so predominantly. However in later productions these parts were played by adults.
In comparison Tchaikovsky’s score received a better critique “astonishingly rich in detailed inspiration”.
Today the Nutcracker suite is performed throughout the world especially at Christmas time, and many adaptations have been made for both Film & TV, and the music has been used for many productions unrelated to the ballet.
