Cantique de Noel was premiered by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to accompany the lyrics of a Christmas poem written by Placide Cappeau. Cappeau was from a small town in Southern France – Roquemaure; and at the end of 1943 in celebration of the completion of the restoration of the church organ he was asked by the parish priest to write a Christmas poem. Later that same year Adam wrote the music to accompany the lyrics. Thank goodness for the restoration of that organ!
